Fashion week is coming up and it’s time to step up my game with black and white, and layers of ruffles. This black bell sleeve top and this layered ruffle skirt are two of my favorites things in my closet, since they are familiar silhouettes with an exaggerated twist. Pairing them together gives an elevated touch to simple black and white, and will definitely make people take a second glance.
I feel strongly about filling my wardrobe with pieces like these. Blouses and skirts with exaggerated peplums, bold sleeves or layers of ruffles fill my closet, and can be fantastic paired with everyday items like jeans and blazers. No longer should you just be looking for a regular white button down or black skirt. Instead, look for items with a bit of an edge or distinctive shape. Besides being your new wardrobe heros, they are extra fun to twirl and spin in!
Once you’ve found your pieces (see my round-up below) take them up the notch with bold patterned accessories and jewelry. I made this necklace an clutch out of matching african fabric from Joann’s, but there are tons of wonderful brands that sell authentic or tribal-inspired accessories for you to add a distinctive edge to your own look. Look for original items- not something that your best friend has- but something that expresses your own unique color and pattern point of view. I promise there is something out there for you!
