We women are content to wear head-to-toe color in dresses and (increasingly so) jumpsuits and rompers. Whether it’s stripes, florals, a solid color or even something louder like leopard, we love the ease of dressing and packing in ‘total looks’ However, when we dress in separates, we typically put together mismatching or contrasting items and avoid the head-to-toe look.
Of course there is an ease to matching jeans with any top in your closet, or throwing on a billowing blouse with short shorts, but why is it that we shy away from going to head-to-toe in separates? Believe it or not, my fashion obsessed mind has put too much a lot of thought into this question, which I think roots in our idea of ‘trying to hard’. When you put on a dress or another total look, your intention is often that you are trying hard. Whether it’s for work, a bridal shower or date night, we dress in head-to-toe looks when we want people to be impressed, and when we want to be perceived as ‘dressing up’. When we wear casual jeans and separates, often the idea is that we are sooooo laid back, and we just threw this together!
I guess my point is that I am drawn to head-to-toe color and looks that come out of separates, because I think they end up being just as or more impressive and intentional and a dress. For instance, this green sweater and skirt was not bought together, in fact, they were not even bought in the same country. However, when I grabbed the sweater to see what I could wear it with, I rifled through my skirt drawer, and stumbled upon this skirt in the exact same color. Then when searching for shoes I noticed that again, I own a pair in this Emerald hue. Putting all of these pieces together resulted in a much more impactful look that if I had just thrown on a green dress, or if I had worn a white tee shirt with the skirt instead. Sure, it takes some cajones to walk down the street in head-to-toe emerald green, but let’s live a little. You have to get dressed anyway, so why not challenge yourself to find 2 things in your closet that match and wear them anyway? Not only will you look shockingly put together but I can promise you a few double takes on the street!
