One year ago today my mom treated me to a trip that I had dreamed of for years- to Marrakesh, Morocco. The intrigue and glamour of this country had me spellbound for years, and finally I was able to experience first-hand the mysteries that this cosmopolitan city had to offer. Although it rained for the majority of the trip, all the wonders I uncovered convinced me I better plan a trip back soon – with hopefully warmer weather.
We stayed in a historic Riad within the medina- walled city center- which made for a convenient 5 minute walk to all the shopping I could carry back for one day. Within the souk the artisans are incredible; hand-welding tiny bits of metal, chiseling intricate patterns out of wood, and dying vivid colors of yarn to make carpets and scarves. The food was no less of a sensory overload as our Moroccan cooking class taught us- custom spice mixes and week-long pickled lemons added to flavors that I already knew were intoxicating and powerful. I loved every moment of this trip. I can’t complete a write of my trip to Morocco without of course mentioning some of the gorgeous things I brought home (besides these pics of course); a real gold leather pouf, hand painted tea glasses and pottery, and my personal favorite, an authentic Moroccan wedding blanket. No, not one of those that is fabricated for west elm tourists, but one that has the original ribbons attached to tie around the brides shoulders, and one with such a unique pattern that I can’t help but hope I can incorporate it into my own wedding.
I know I sound like a love-sick teen when I re-count this trip, but that’s because it really was amazing, despite the poor weather. I appreciate that my mom went through the trouble to organize it and it really will be remembered as one of my favorite trips of all time. Who can help but love a mother-daughter bonding trip with great shopping, good food, and deep culture?
Someday I hope to visit again. In the meantime, I would love to hear if you have been to Morocco and what you thought of it. If not, where is your dream travel destination?
