I talk about this almost every year, but my biggest styling trick for fall and winter is to put a turtleneck under it.
Almost anything you wear for spring or summer can easily transition into fall or winter by adding a turtleneck, and the bonus is the chic level rises about 5 points (on the hypothetical scale of 10, stay with me here). This warm weather white ruffle dress from MSGM is adorable for summer, but some might think it should retire for the cooler months. Not me! Bring out your ruffles, your chiffon, your cutouts, your florals- each will be enhanced in their own way with a layered turtleneck.
But before you go out and put a turtleneck under everything in your closet, I must warn you that the right turtleneck does matter. We are looking for a thin layer of warmth. Nothing too chunky of a knit or too bulky that won’t fit easily under a coat if needed. Plus, once you get indoors and sit down for dinner or grab that cocktail, you don’t want to be burning up. Look for a fine rib knit like the one I have from Kenzo (old), or stock up on some of my favorites, the Tissue Turtleneck from J.Crew.
I have to laugh now when I reach for a turtleneck. I have been wearing them for years. A black, grey and striped version are ALL staples in my wardrobe, as seen here, here and here. I have been wearing turtlenecks in California my whole life and mostly been ridiculed because people thought I must be boiling! But now that Kim K wears a turtleneck almost everyday in LA (layered under furs and bomber jackets might I add) it’s become commonplace. Everyone wants that sexy but covered up look, which is fine with me because its especially lengthening and flattering on ALL (Kim proves it) body types.
