Exaggerated sleeves have been all the rage for about a year now, but I’m here to tell you there actually is an evolution of the trend. It started with volume and ruffles very high up on the sleeve or shoulder – think about all those one shoulder and off shoulder ruffle tops you’ve seen on my fellow bloggers. This volume has moved down south into the kimono sleeve territory, which is more streamlined and sophisticated, but still as statement-making.
The oversize voluminous sleeve with a slit in the end reminds me of the pockets the Geishas store their entertaining possessions, like handkerchiefs and tea whisks. The cinching of the waist with the elongated hem begs for a cool obi-like belt, and the way the sleeve and off the shoulder cut mold together gives me an origami vibe. How to wear an ancient inspired kimono sleeves in modern day? Keep it clean in slim silhouettes with less adornment to let the volume speak. And look for cooler fabrics in denim, chambray and heavy cottons to give the sleeve shape! And then. when you’re all dolled up invite a friend or husband to a Sushi dinner and revel in your ironic play on Japanese culture ;)
