I’ve spent a lot of time in the past few weeks analyzing my wardrobe- what is my style, what isn’t. I’ve gone through my closet twice in the pursuit of cleaning out items that don’t feel like ‘me’, whether it’s through the color, cut or pattern. I feel pretty confident with my color choices- I love black and white stripes in any form, bold red and royal blue, mustard yellow, camel and emerald green. However I am still working on silhouettes and cuts, trying to understand what is flattering but also comfortable. The truth is that it is an ever-evolving process, which is why I named this blog The Style Safari in the first place.
What I know does feel like me are items that are bold, detailed and feel collected, but cool. I love layering this floral jacket over the embroidered oversize blouse and leather leggings. The mixture of shape and texture feels multi-faceted, which feels like me. I am comfortable, but still feel sexy, and with a bold red lip and sunglasses, I feel protected.
In the blogging world you compare yourself to a lot of bloggers who really know their style. They may always be in jeans and heels, or maybe they are a lace and full skirt type of girl. I have a hard time creating consistency like other bloggers because I love to experiment so much- so it can be hard for a reader who loves one outfit and absolutely hates the next. But I’m working on it- I’ve started to create a sort of pro/con list of my favorite shapes and pieces, as well as things that just are NOT me. My hope is that I will able to shop smarter and create consistency for my readers.
There are a few things I know for sure are on that list, especially in this outfit. Leather leggings, printed or floral jackets (especially the bomber kind), and oversize white shirts all fall into the absolutely YES category. What falls into the NO? Well, I’m still working on it, but one is knee length skirts and dresses. They make me look shorter than I am and never feel fashionable. Short, mid calf or full length are the lengths for me. What else? I hate trench coats. I have owned 2 and never worn them. They seem perfect for San Francisco weather, but really arent- they provide zero warmth and just get in the way! Why wear a trench when a leather jacket is so much more practical? Anyway, more to come on that list!
Floral Jackets…. mine is old H&M but I found this and this great option, the absolute best Helmut Lang leather leggings, my shirt was old Zara but they have so many great options here, here, here, here and here, Sam Edelman heel boots (similar)
