We don’t ALL live in the freezing North East. Some of us actually live in milder, temperate climates (or even hot ones- Texas I see you!) and the weather never permits the wearing of a bulky shearling or wool coat. I realized pretty early in my transition from living in NYC to the San Francisco suburbs that my coat collection would become useless. What took me a while to figure out is what my new topper or third piece would be. About 6 months ago I had a revelation about vests, or gilets, if we want to use the much fancier french wording. These were quickly to become my third piece styling option, and all of the additional warmth I need for our mild climate.
A strategically worn vest adds an instant dose of thoughtfulness and practicality to almost any look. Where a jacket says, “I’m cold”, a vest says “I threw this on” which is always a cooler vibe. Even when the temperatures drop to the 50s in San Francisco, a faux fur vest like this one can be worn over a thicker sweater or turtleneck to still provide warmth. Add a cute knit hat and you will be shocked how warm you will be!
I have wanted to add to my vest collection for a while, and most recently added this trench vest for a lighter weight option. I also own a black faux fur vest, a white leather vest, a fitted plaid version, and think a long grey wool one will be my next version.
