Spring may be here but what that means temperature-wise, I never know. It goes from tropical to tundra day by day, which makes it so important to keep those light winter coats at the ready. Living in chilly San Francisco, of course we have this practice down pat, but recently I’ve been in Dallas and New York, and the cold and windy temps surprised me.
The easiest way to dress for spring is with a light, fresh and springy underlayer, and then topping it off with a warm winter coat. This may seem counter-intuitive. You may prefer to wear a lighter outer layer, like a trendy bomber or a leather jacket, over jeans and a light sweater. While there is nothing wrong with that idea, I argue that my philosophy is better. Why? Because I’m a fashion blogger and you have to trust me, right?
No really… It’s because wearing a light dress or skirt, or even culottes under a long coat plays with proportions and also is better for maximizing indoor/outdoor activities. When you are heading to a brunch or a happy hour, you want to be wearing your cutest dress or your new skirt, not your old sweater you have been wearing for months, even if that bomber jacket is new. Inevitably you will take the jacket or bomber off when you get indoors, and you won’t get to show off that fun new thing you bought!
In contrast, when you are outside, you have your winter coat, a nice long protective layer to shield you from the elements. And the proportional different between something short or cropped underneath a long layer is much more flattering than layering extra bulky jackets and sweaters on the top half of your body. So… now that you’ve thought about it… you agree with the fashion blogger right? ;) Let me know if you agree or disagree in the comments section!
