This past weekend the urge to craft struck me so I whipped out some beads and paints to put together this wooden bead necklace. You’ve seen necklaces like this all over Etsy and Anthropologie for upwards of $100, but really you can make a simple version yourself for less than $10. Plus I really find painting to be calming, so creating this necklace was a nice alternative to running around New York City like a mad woman.
What you need:
1. Several large wooden beads, any color or shape
2. Leather cord- you can find this at your local Michael’s crafts. I measured mine to 26″ to hang longer around my neck
3. Metal cording ends and a jump ring
4. Needle nose pliers
5. Paint and paintbrush
6. E6000 all purpose glue
7. Scissors
Step 1: Paint the beads. I used a bent bobby pin to help me hold the beads as I painted. Let dry.
Step 2: Put a small amount of E6000 glue on the metal cord stop and push the leather cord into it. E6000 can take a while to dry, so this is a good time for another coat of paint on your beads
Step 3: Use the needle nose pliers to squeeze the metal cord stopper around the leather cord. String the beads and then repeat steps 2 and 3 on the other side of the cord
Step 4: Insert a jump ring into the 2 metal cord stoppers to close the necklace.
That’s it- your necklace is complete! I wore mine to work this week and was surprised at how many compliments I got, and now with my extra beads I think I am going to make a few more for some of my friends.
