My newest sewing project was completed in under 2 hours! This high neck vertical stripe dress only has one seam , and everything else was draped and cut on my mannequin. I’ve never made anything like this before, but sometimes in fabric stores I see fabric and black out! The next thing you know I’m hoarding jacquards and french laces under my bed where my husband won’t find them.

High neck vertical black white orange stripe dress made by Stefanie Schoen of The Style Safari
That is exactly what happened with this fabric. Obviously I love stripes, but and orange, black, grey and white knit version kept catching my eye in my local Joann’s. So I did what any Parks and Recreation fan would do- treat yo self to a yard and a half. I had no plans for what to make, but the neon orange kept flashing at me like an orange traffic cone “STOP, buy ME. BUY me. BUY ME!” And hence, I did.
My last two projects, my mixed print dress and the tribal jacket, were quite big and stressful. You can understand that next I wanted to make something patternless and with limited clean up. After folding the fabric multiple ways horizontally, I found that I got the most impact by placing the thick bold lines vertically. This way I could take the neck line all. the. way. up!
I pulled the fabric around the width of the mannequin, cut holes for arms, ran a seam down the back, cut a diamond shape out of the lower back and tied together the top portion in a loose knot. After trying it on I realized that I needed to line it, so I repeated the process with lining and attached at the arm holes. Seriously, less than two hours for this dress and I am obsessed with the bold yet effortless statement it makes!
I wish I could say, “shop this fabric here!” but sadly, I’m still not there yet. However, you can buy the fabric for $5.99/yard at your local Joann’s, and try your own hand and wrapping, cutting and sewing this together. Or better yet, but the fabric and snapchat me @thestylesafari and I will walk you through the process! Its so easy- let’s get to it!
