Writing about my latest design, my tiered mix print ruffle dress actually feels like punishment. After the excruciatingly long process of designing and sewing this dress, sharing my struggles with it on instagram and flying it with me to NYC to finally photograph it… writing a blog post to sum up the design seems like overkill.
So, I will sum it up for you. The goal of this project was to create a more flowing, over the top dress that would challenge my sewing skills. I wanted to explore some new finishes with my Huskylock S25, including a rolled hem, and using a piping foot (which will sew on piping and overlock the edges in the same seam!). However, I ran into several issues with the banding on the dress around the neck and waist, and the interfacing that I used to reinforce them (more on this in another post!). So I ended up having to re-do portions of the dress 2 or 3 times in order to get it right, and eventually had to hand-sew a lot in order get the insides to look right.
I was so frustrated with how much time and detail this dress took me that I shared it on my instagram here, and I received a TON of love and support encouraging me with the outcome of the dress. Many of you said to take some time away from the dress and that I would be able to finally see it for how beautiful it was and spoiler alert….: YOU’RE RIGHT.
When I took the dress out of my suitcase in NYC a week later I realized how much I loved the dress. With all of the inside finishes done, I was able to wear it and twirl in it… and not be pulling or tugging on parts that felt out of place. In fact, it was more wearable than I had originally even thought! I received so many compliments on this dress walking the NYC streets, that even my husband was like… “maybe you should start a line.” If all that support didn’t encourage me to love the dress, than I don’t know what will!
Anyway, the rest is history and all of the pictures of this dress and some of the insides (as many of you fellow sewists have asked to see!) are included in this post. I am hoping to film a video for my YouTube series on everything I WISH I DONE when making this dress, and I will include it in this post below when it’s completed, or you can subscribe to my YouTube channel here to catch it as soon as it goes live!
