Once you start creating your own patterns and outfits, you see the world differently. I can’t see something I want without thinking about how I can recreate it myself, even it’s something I’ve never made. It’s a blessing and a curse, because yes, I can sew stuff. But on the flip side, I now look at EVERYTHING out there and say, “Should I just save money and try to make it myself?”
This bathing suit, towel and cover up combo is one of those items. I have never made a bathing suit, but I figured hey, it’s only a few tiny little pieces of fabric, how hard could this be?
HARD It turns out.
This is actually the second bathing suit I tried to make with my Wisteria Bud fabric. I tried to make a one-piece first but since I had no idea what I was doing, the mess was pulling in one direction and sagging in the other-completely unflattering and a little disheartening. I have a completely new respect for swim, lingerie and dance costume designers- the precision is insane! I started anew with this bikini top and chopped the bottom off of the one piece to use as a bikini bottom, and things started to come together!
The scarf cover up was an easy add on piece that I figured would get tons of wear this summer. Trimmed in cobalt blue pom poms, I think it stands up nicely to the neon green, and the pom pom shape mirrors the wisteria buds in my print.
The final piece is the matching towel I designed through Society6. If you’re going to layer prints, why not just go ALL. THE. WAY? And now I don’t need to travel to hawaii, because in my tropical surroundings I blend in perfectly.
Looking for your own beach towel? You can shop my design on my Society6 page, and shop my fabric on my Spoonflower design shop. As usual I appreciate your feedback and comments- good or bad!
