It’s the Holiday season and every single year I set out to make a boatload of handmade custom gifts for my loved ones. Everything from custom aprons for my niece and nephew, ornaments and T-shirts, to a blazer for my husband (which was a nightmare), it doesn’t feel like the holiday season to me unless there is at least one attempt at a homemade gift.
This year I am thrilled to be partnering with Simplicity to create custom Daddy Daughter Reversible Robe Gifts for Marina and Chef Jeff!
Daddy Daughter Reversible Robe Gifts
As a sewing mom of a daughter, it’s pretty easy for me to twin with my little, making us both matching outfits or doing coordinating hats, vests etc. See some of my favorite examples here, here and here!
But it’s a little trickier to create authentic moments for daddies to match with their daughters, and so I thought matching reversible robes would be the perfect way for my favorite 2 people to twin at home. Since Chef Jeff takes Marina with him for many of his showers, what could be more perfect than to have them both throw on matching robes to cuddle and goof off around the house in after?
{I cut the fabric on my dining table using weight and a rotary cutter}
{To make Marina’s smaller toddler size, I had to size down considerably from the child pattern}
I chose Simplicity’s easy S9021/R10370 reversible robe pattern, which already has unisex sizes for adults and teens. You can find this pattern online at Simplicity.com or at Joann stores. This is SUCH a great #LearnToSew pattern for newbies, as there are no complicated closures or collars to have to work around. Although it does require a lot of fabric, most of the work is in the cutting, and once you get to sewing you will breeze right along!

For fabric I picked two contrasting patterns (my specialty!) that were not too masculine, not too feminine, and not to Holiday specific. I didn’t want anything that screamed Christmas and that they would only wear once a year, and figured these robes would actually be fantastic for our Lake Tahoe house where we go for 4th of July as well, hence the stars. While I LOVE the prints of the fabric I chose, they were on a minky fabrication which is extremely soft but very thick and sheds EVERYWHERE. This was really my only mistake in making this garment, as I found myself hand vacuuming after every seam I cut! I wish I had chosen something a little thinner like flannel or fleece, which doesn’t shed and would take more to the reversible style of the robe.
Even though the fabric was a little thick, I still managed to use my Viking Husqvarna Designer Jade sewing and embroidery machine to customize both robes. Since my husband is the cook in this family, I embroidered “Chef Jeff” and “Marina” on each robe, using a font that I uploaded to my Designer Jade myself from my computer library. I couldn’t believe how easy it was to use my own computer fonts, and will definitely be doing more of this in the coming weeks for Holiday projects!
Marina’s embroidery is a little low, as it is under the waistband, but as she grows the robe will still fit her and we will be able to read her name perfectly. This was only my second embroidery project EVER, so I’m still a newbie, but love that it takes the custom robes up a notch even if it’s not absolutely perfect!
When Marina put on her robe, she literally squealed with delight and ran up and down the hallway dancing. She LOVES her robe and proceeded to wear it for the next several hours. Jeff loves his as well, and was shocked at how soft and comfortable they are. I decided to try it on myself just in case I get a little jealous and want to match my main girl as well, and luckily the size M fits both of us adults pretty well!
I am so so happy that these came out and just in time for the weather to drop here. Cozy custom robes means more quality time at home with my family, drinking hot cocoa, watching movies and sitting by a fire. They aren’t just Holiday gifts, they are memory makers!
