There has certainly been a resurgence lately of the one piece bathing suit, both for fashion and comfort reasons. I for one, think a one piece bathing suit is incredibly chic and versatile, and worn the right clothing it can be worn for far more than swimming!
As bodysuits have made a resurgence, I present the one piece bathing suit as an alternative to dusting off your 1980’s relics. Why? Because you can swim in it of course! And then when it’s time to walk off the beach you can slip on anything high waisted, and instantly you have a chic slimming look. But let it be known there are tips to pulling off this look! First, make sure the print or pattern is lengthening or flattering. How do you know if it is? Stick to vertical lines, like my H&M version, or diagonal lines that slide over curves giving a slimming effect. Second, one piece bathing suit neckline is CRITICA. Go for either a high neck, a very low neck, or a wide square cut shape. A random v or u-neck that is neither high nor there cuts you off in an unflattering place, and doesn’t keep the lines long.
Lastly, the item that you are layering over the bathing suit should hit right at the waist. One piece bathing suits often disguise our waistline (which can be great in some occasions!) but once you start layering you have to be more conscious. Pairing a waist-defining pair of shorts or skirt will be much more slimming than anything low waisted, and even if you are tying a pareo around your waist, keep it at the waist, to really highlight those curves. Save those low waisted items for your bikinis, as bikinis already do more to show the waist and highlight the hips.
