I haven’t gone monochrome in awhile, and although I can’t imagine my world without color, I saw this dress and instantly fell in love. It may only be black and white, but the abstract dot print on the fabric is so unique and absolutely eye catching.
As I have been designing fabric lately, I have become acutely aware of other fabric designs and textures, and love seeing new ways to use them in clothing and home textiles. This fabric alternates from white with black spots to black with white spots, and in between has stripes of sheerness and opacity. If I saw it on a roll in the fabric store, I would NEVER have imagined to use it in this way, with these beautiful draped cape sleeves, punctuated with thick black elastic. In some ways there is so much to this dress, and in others it is really rather simple- there is just an inspiring use of fabric which transforms the style. As a designer, this type of piece really makes me think beyond the boundaries, and will hopefully help me to push myself in new design directions with my patterned fabrics.
