Last week on the plane to San Francisco I watched a documentary on the legendary decorator and fashion personality Iris Apfel. She is so inspiring for so many reasons. I loved that although she was successful in her profession for years, she didn’t actually reach the point of fame until her 80’s, which just goes to show it’s never to late to be ‘something’. I also love her process for selecting items in thrift stores. She doesn’t care about brand names but just wants a great piece at a great price. I think in the past few years or so living in New York I have become very brand-aware, but I look forward to going back to the days of just buying something beautiful because it makes you happy, not because its trendy or on sale or because its a cool brand. Lastly, she loved layering color, and not that this look has lots of layers, but believe it or not her style was my inspiration behind this look. Instead of pairing a simple earring with this dress since there are so many colors in it already, I matched it to an equally bright and joyous earring that would bring out how fun the colors are. If you haven’t watched the documentary, definitely look for it next time you are on a United flight!
