Another new fabric in the books for me in this project, as I stumbled upon a fantastic faux silver leather in Joann Fabrics a few weeks ago and thought it would be fun to make a silver leather skirt. At first thought, a silver leather skirt is probably not everyone’s first idea of a wardrobe ‘essential’, but made in a comfortable fabric at a long enough length to look professional but fashion forward, and a silver leather skirt can become your next wardrobe go-to!
I found that the best way to sew this skirt was to do one side and pocket completely before starting the other side, as opposed to sewing 2 of the same seams first, and then moving on the next step. This meant if I had to re-do something I would only have to do it side, and make the other side perfectly.
A few things I would change about this skirt:
- I added fullness in the overall sweep of the skirt, as well as the side seams. Once I added in the box pleat, there was too much fullness in the front, which means you really don’t see the box pleat at all. If I had added less fullness to the overall, I think the box pleat would have opened more and had more movement.
- I made the pocket bags too small. Not sure why I did this… but I can go back and fix it pretty easily.
- The hem. I cut about 1.5″ off of my original pattern once I first tried it on, but I think it could lose another 1″ and still be wearable. Everything is about proportion, and as this skirt sits above my natural waist, it’s a bit too long of a proportion to my body at this length.
I have actually worn this skirt a handful of times already, which is a step in the right direction for my goal of a handmade wardrobe with style. No linen sack dresses here! It looks amazing with sneakers, a grey sweater, almost any color, and worn under or over most tops. I styled it with a belt here, but I think it actually looks better without the belt as it gives a cleaner line. I can’t wait to wear it a few more times this holiday season and share it with you all!
