Alright, alright, alright! First up on the house renovation list is my dining room and I’m excited to share this mockup with you! I’m calling it my Mid Century Modern Floral Dining Room (what a mouthful) because of the mod chairs and the floral wallpaper that is inspired by mid century designs. Check it out below!
For those of you who need a reminder, this is what my dining room ‘before’ looks like. It has taupe colored walls and a large unframed window, with an overbearing light fixture that hangs at about my shoulder height. The light fixture is actually the reason we are focusing on redecorating the dining room first. We currently have our old round table in this room until our new one comes, which means constantly dodging the fixture so as not to lose an eye.
The ‘after’ mockup is much brighter, with more movement and life. I have always wanted to have a statement dining room, but the architecture of my 1980’s house doesn’t lend it to formal wainscoting or over the top lighting. Instead, I am adding a thin black trim around the outside of my window to frame the space, and want to do one accent wall in black and white floral wallpaper. The wallpaper is removable just in case I change my mind in a few years (as I often do!) and will be installing it myself in the coming weeks.
I polled you guys in this post about whether I should go for a white or wood table, and even though many people chose natural wood, I went for white as a contrast to my dark floors. To avoid everything in the room being black and white, I knew I wanted a pop of color in the chairs… but oh I couldn’t decide! Emerald green in my absolute favorite, but somehow I felt that this room needed a cooler color. Plus my kitchen has a lot of light blue in it, so I felt that this was a seamless transition from room to room.
One more bit about the chairs. As a 32 year old, I felt it was time to have upholstered chairs, as I have detailed in this post. As a new mom, and since this table has to function as our kitchen table, I knew it was smarter to buy plastic or wood chairs that are easier to clean. As much as I would have loved to custom upholster dining chairs, these $62 Eames-style mod plastic chairs give a lot of look, are comfortable, and provide me with the touch of sanity of I need so as not to worry about one more thing with baby.
The final debate is the chandelier. I can’t say I am 100% on board with this style, but I haven’t found what I am looking for for a price I am willing to pay. I really don’t want to pay more than $500 for a modern fixture, but I want it to be large enough for the room (ideally 45″-55″) and have clean lines. I am in love with the bubble lights of Lindsey Adelman but can’t even afford the replicas as they currently stand. Anyone have any ideas for me?
