I’ve been planning to do this DIY for years… I mean truly, years. 3.1 Philip Lim designed a sweatshirt like this years ago that was about $600, and I love the embellished cold shoulder detail. It wasn’t until I saw this floral embellished cold shoulder sweatshirt for $975 that I realized I couldn’t put this DIY off any longer. It will cost you about $25 and 30 minutes of your time (plus drying time) and the look is perfect for the holidays AND next spring!
DIY Floral Cold Shoulder Sweatshirt
What you Need
- Simple sweatshirt. Reuse an old one or head to Target for either this or this version in the men’s section.
- Faux florals from your local craft store. They are on sale in most places now until Christmas!
- Hot Glue
- Scissors
- Loose bar pin backs like these
- Fabric Fusion – or sew on a machine if you have the capability!
How to Make the Cold Shoulder Sweatshirt
Step 1: Try on your sweatshirt and mark where you want the cold shoulder to be. Cut out the shoulder in a curved shape and make sure you account for 3/4-1″ extra that can be folded over for seam allowance.
Step 2: Use the Fabric Fusion to glue the folded over 3/4″ edge. Allow to dry for 1-2 hours. You can place a heavy book on the area in order to give pressure to the glued area.
Step 3: Cut the stems off of the flowers as close to the base as possible.
Step 4: Hot glue the small hole of flower to secure it, and then using extra glue, press on the bar pin into the back of the flower. Allow to dry completely.
Step 5: Pin flowers onto the front side of the sweatshirt along the edge of the cold shoulder cutout. You can also use these pins as brooches and details for other coats, tops and accessories!
