Call it the effect of the election aftermath, or the result of a year long support for the female executive, the pink pussy hat, and the freed nipple, but the biggest fashion trend for fall is a direct result of female empowerment and equality in the workplace.
What’s the biggest fashion trend for fall? Modern, cool, and updated suiting that harks at years of menswear trends but with it’s own feminine and fashion forward twist. Sure, there have been years when suiting returns, but typically in the form of oversized or skinny silhouettes. This year, look for ruffles, chiffon inserts, feminine skirts, rounded shapes and feminine colors (pink!) to brush up that workwear wardrobe.
I have always been attracted to women’s suiting. Every few years when it comes back I stock up on long line blazers and matching pant sets, because I have always felt more professional and put together in a head to toe look. Plus, from the design and sewing side, I appreciate all the work that goes into a killer blazer or pant, and love that it’s one of the few items of clothing that looks as good on as it was difficult to make.
While I am not a ruffle or chiffon insert girl, I have already bought several new blazers for my fall wardrobe (perfect for San Francisco weather- No shearling needed here!) and a few ‘extra’ pieces to complete my suiting look. In order to nail the biggest fashion trend for fall, I have bought this oversize plaid drop shoulder jacket and skirt combo, and found a semi-matching newsboy cap to polish off the look. All pieces are Zara and I think the whole suit set is under $100. The length of the jacket with the short skirt is what makes the look modern, and styled with casual accessories and literally the goofiest pictures I could take… it’s a cute everyday look.
My other look also stuck with a grey palette but this time combining the perfect daytime tuxedo pant with a matching grey off the shoulder sweatshirt. You get the vibe of a matching suit set because the pant and shoes are so formal, but with the long gathered sleeves, tie waist and sweatshirt material of the top, the comfort level is much more casual than ‘business’. This top was the hero of my NYFW wardrobe, as I reached for it both for fancier outings and a gym coverup.
I absolutely loved shooting these looks in NYC with my favorite photographer (based in Dallas) Angie Garcia. She is always willing to be creative and shoot something crazy- and these fun goofy shots of the NYC I grew up loving, that’s right- touristy Times Square- we’re an absolute blast to create. She nailed it and now I feel like I have an editorial shoot worthy of a magazine cover!
