Hi Guys! I am so excited because today is the first partnership I have with one of the companies you hear me talk about all the time on this website, Spoonflower! I’ve partnered with them to highlight their newest fabric, Celosia Velvet™! Even though its perfect for upholstery and home decor, it also happens to be perfect for accessories hence my DIY velvet clutch!
Making this clutch was a breeze because this fabric was sturdy and easy to sew. Many velvets shed a TON when you sew them because of their heavy pile, but this velvet is manageable and still lush and soft. This DIY velvet clutch was such a fun project because I got to use one of my own fabric designs, which comes in a variety of color ways, in order to made this clutch reversible! My Indigo Blue Ikat is available here, and the Blush Pink color way is available here, to order in velvet or any other fabric you like.
I also cut the top edge on a diagonal and added my absolute favorite black and white ribbon trim to both sides for a bit more interest. The finishing touch was a keychain I own of the letter ‘S’ for Stefanie, so everyone knows this is MY BAG!
Let’s get started on this DIY Velvet Clutch!
What you Need
- 2 Fat Quarters or 27″x18″ of Spoonflower Celosia Velvet (SPECIAL OFFER: if you order by EOD 9/17 you can get 15% off your order of 1 yard or more!)
- 14″ Metal Zipper
- 32″ of decorative trims (optional)
- Ruler or Measuring Tape
- Sewing Supplies; Scissors, Pins, Sewing Machine, Thread
How to Make the DIY Velvet Clutch
Step 1: Cut fabric pieces to 14″ by 18″ Rectangles
Step 2: Match wrong sides of fabric together and cut an angled line down from one corner to create the asymmetric zipper closure
Step 3: Measure your trims to be long enough to cut both sides of the angled closure edge
Step 4: Pin the zipper in place along the angled edge, using a 1″ seam allowance. Use a zipper foot to sew along inside of zipper and fabric, making sure 1/4″ of zipper tape will still be visible
Step 5: Flip the clutch to the right side and carefully pin trims in place. They will wiggle along the velvet as you sew, so move slowly and adjust as you sew both sides of the trim to the fabric.
Step 6: Fold the clutch in half, matching the side and bottom seams. Pin in place and sew around outside edge with 5/8″ seam allowance
Step 7: Trim the corners and thick trim edges around the zipper and turn inside out! Your beautiful DIY velvet clutch is complete!
