New Series Alert! Let’s talk about buying a unique piece of clothing and finding a way to style it from Everyday to Editorial. The bottom line when shopping with intention is knowing if you will be able to wear something in multiple ways, over years and years and years. It doesn’t mean you have to stick to basic black sweaters and white tee shirts! It means finding that piece that represents your style and brings you joy (thanks Marie Kondo) but will be able to be worn in multiple ways.
Take this metallic lavender vintage Balenciaga coat. I found it last week while vintage shopping in LA, and fell in love with it. But let’s get real… is LAVENDER METALLIC. On one hand its completely Golden Girls INSANE. But on second…
It’s a statement piece.
It’s lightweight, so can be worn for 3 seasons/year.
It can be dressed up or down.
It makes me smile.
It’s Balenciaga, for goodness sake.
So how do I style this coat from Everyday to Editorial? Let me show you!
Lavender Metallic Coat for Everyday
This coat is the look in itself. So of course you can just style it with a t-shirt and jeans or a little black dress, but since this is a style blog, I mixed it up a little. Military green is an extremely versatile color, and actually tones down the overt femininity of the lavender metallic. Pairing the coat with tailored military green pants with a black tuxedo stripe is a nice way to wear the coat for a business meeting or work, without looking like you’re headed to the circus.
And speaking of circus, do yourself a favor and pair the coat with a collared blouse. Since the coat is collarless and has a nice double breasted neck detail, it looked wonderful worn underneath a collared top. I chose to wear one with an oversized scallop to accentuate the look, but even a regular collar will look nice. You can even style it with a short chunky necklace or a brooch to complete that sixties Audrey Hepburn vibe.
Worn open, the jacket is surprisingly casual because of the drippiness of the collar and rounded dolman sleeves. This is a signature cut of the house of Cristobal Balenciaga, due to its versatility and comfort. Slash pockets are hidden in the seams but don’t take away from the streamlined shape.
Wondering how to get this look? I’ve got you covered! You might not be able to find this exact jacket, but maybe you have a similar style in your closet already that you need some inspiration to re-wear, or perhaps one below might strike your fancy!
Got the look? Ok, now lets take this look from Everyday to Editorial by mixing in some prints and playing with color.

The great thing about pastels is that they pair fantastically with other pastels. I picked out this floral dress from my closet which doesn’t have lavender in it, but still works perfectly. Choosing a dress shorter than the jacket makes it all about the jacket, which allows you to have a little more fun with what is under it.
A black striped tee is obviously my go to for any styling trick, so shockingly I paired one under the floral dress for a little graphic contrast. Plus the black and white combo provides a nice grounding for the pastels.
The last bit of styling this coat from Everyday to Editorial was choosing platform brogues. The easy way to style something is with heels. But flats are much less expected, especially with striped bobby socks. I love that sometimes the editorial look can actually be the more comfortable one, even if it means making a few heads turn.
