I sew a lot of things on this blog, but so far haven’t really showed any sewing tutorials. I thought I would start with this easy skirt pattern, since it only has 2 seams and is perfect for warm summer weather. You can easily make it in under 2 hours, and once you get comfortable with the basic shape of it, it’s simple to add on extra layers or details. I’ve written up how to make the skirt below, with a Pinterest friendy version of the easy skirt pattern and directions, so that you can refer to it whenever you need.
When picking fabrics to create this skirt, or anything else you plan to make, I urge you to think about the entire outfit. I typically don’t wear too many maxi skirts because they are all a bit too feminine for me. Mots maxi skirts are too simple in solid colors, or too girly in florals for me, so I thought about roughing it up with an edgier tribal/animal print.
I wanted to give the skirt a more rock ‘n roll vibe, so I loved pairing it with this Reclaimed Vintage lace up Rolling Stones tee and metal hardware belt. A cropped parachute jacket still highlights the waist without being too frumpy, and easy flats finish off the look for errands and endless walking.
What you Need to Make the Skirt
1.1.5-2 yards of fabric. This will be how much goes around your waist, so it depends on how much volume you want. I chose 1.5 yards.
2. 2″ elastic (or whatever you preference is) measured 2″ smaller than your natural waist. This gives enough of a stretch to stay up, but not too much to make it uncomfortable.
Keep In Mind
I chose a sheer animal print chiffon since the skirt is double layer. Make sure to pick something light and flowy that will not add too much excess bulk around the elastic waist area.
I also added another contrast panel of fabric onto the top fold layer for a little movement and flow. This is not necessary to create the skirt, but once you are conformable with the pattern, you can easily add on and get creative.
