Although my devoted readers will surely think I made it up, one of the biggest spring trends is actually stripes! While I fully embrace this trend season after season, designers like Proenza Schouler, Etro, Givenchy and Missoni showed stripes in spades for spring. Instead of classic black and white, stripes for spring include technicolor versions, either in primaries, pastels or boldly grounded in black. They will be seamed together haphazardly in order to move the eye, they will be worn head to toe, and even will be boldly draped for evening wear.
Now you know that stripes are a real trend that out there in the fashion universe, but that doesn’t mean go run out and buy 15 new striped items. In fact, re-thinking what you already have in your closet may be the best way to interpret this spring trend. As I mentioned in my March Purchases post, my mom bought me this perfectly on-brand pastel striped skirt from Zara while we were traveling in London. I thought right away that it was the perfect skirt for spring, because the pastel colors make it perfect for Easter Sunday, bridal and baby showers, casual brunches and business meetings alike. The best part was that I imagined being able to wear white, chambray, yellow, black and mint green tops with it. I even had a white blouse fully lined up to photograph. But once again, the benefit of knowing what you love and sticking with it, is surprising yourself with older items in your closet that also go with your look. Wondering what I’m talking about? I shocked myself when I pulled this J.Crew striped tee from last spring out from my closet only to find that it matched almost perfectly to the skirt, and the fact that it didn’t quite match is what made it interesting. Retailers copy each other year after year (trust me, I know) and so if you trust your instincts and stick to what you love, chances are history- and spring trend- will repeat itself.
