5 years ago overalls rushed back onto the style scene with Birkenstocks, pool slides, and sweatpants. Functional fashion has evolved from those early norm-core days, but one element seems to get cooler with each iteration- overalls.
While the actual overall itself hasn’t changed much, the acceptable styling of them has. It used to be cute to wear your overalls to concert with a band tee, or on errands with a baggy sweater. All those pockets made carrying your keys, phone, and credit card easy while keeping your hands free. These days, layering overalls over…. well, all– is what’s the newest, cutest, most modern.
This pastel ruffled top (that I rented from Rent the Runway) would be obviously cute worn with regular blue skinny jeans or a white skirt. But playing up the volume with the constriction of the bib top makes you look at the outfit twice, and with the yellow ruffle cascading out the side of the overalls its sure you will get a second look as you leave a room.
When shopping for overalls for yourself, looks for ones with a differentiating detail. A ticking stripe, flare legs, distressing or center zipper are great to set them apart. You can also go with a wide cropped leg for all day comfort, or fitted through the hip for a little sex appeal.
