One of the ‘must-have’ items I could never get behind was a trench coat. You read time and time again that a classic trench coat is a wardrobe staple… just not for me. I’ve tried 2 different versions, one for San Francisco and one for NYC, and both times I never wore the coat, because the temperature and purpose just wasn’t right. Enter… the trench coat vest!
I recently bought this trench coat vest for NYFW and quickly it became one of my favorite things to wear. What’s the difference vs. a classic coat? Layering and versatility. A classic trench coat is surprisingly bulky for adding zero additional warmth making it too light for winter and too heavy for fall. A trench coat vest provides the same length and casual vibe, but easily layers over anything from lightweight dresses to bulky sweaters, making it perfect for fall.
Let’s talk versatility. A trench coat vest can be worn 3 ways! Worn open, its a casual layering topper that provides movement and functionality. Worn closed over jeans or a top like I have and its slightly more tailored but still easy. Worn as a dress with nothing underneath and you have a high fashion look that’s all class and no Carmen San Diego. Pair it with a contrast belt instead of the camel tie belt it comes with for extra polish.
I don’t have any fall travels coming up (thank goodness!) but if I did, this would be the first piece I pack. Or more likely, wear on the plane, since it provides a bit of warmth without overheating and has plenty of pockets for boarding passes and other documents. I am in love with the trench coat vest and my only regret is not hacking off the sleeves of my prior trench coats years ago!
