Shoes oh shoes oh shoes…. why is there and ENDLESS supply of styles and never any supply of dough? Why do I have 4 different pairs of platform sandals in my wishlist at one retailer right now, because I feel there really is a need for a tan pair, a black pair, a red pair and a gold pair?
Instead of dropping close to a G on platform sandals, I challenged myself to not only upgrade a pair I own, but see if I could find a way to satiate my platform appetite, all in one shoe. And hence, my interchangeable ribbon trim sandal DIY was born.
The trick to this is finding ribbons and trims that you really, really like. Like, more than the shoe. Once you put a great trim on something mediocre, you wouldn’t believe how fun it is to wear and fancy it looks. I swear. You be the judge!
What you Need:
1. Sandals with a semi-thick toe strap
2. Assorted Ribbons
3. Fabric Fusion Glue
5. Sticky back telco (I ended up buying a sheet to cut up; I didn’t use the circles above. Scroll down to see)
Step 1: Measure and cut your ribbon to cover lengthwise the toe strap of the sandal with 1/4″ on either end. Make sure you cut the angles on an edge so they don’t overlap the base of the shoe.
Step 2: Fold over the 1/4″ on the ends and secure with Fabric Fusion Glue. Let Dry.
Step 3: Trim the folded edges of the ribbon
Step 4: Cut the velcro in small pieces that fit the placement and and size of your ribbon
Step 5: Press the velcro onto the ribbon trim and sandal, double-checking placement. The velcro I bought takes 15 minutes to latch on, so be patient. The stick should be strong enough to hold the ribbon in place, but weak enough that if you want to go sans-ribbon, you can just pull it off!
