Amber Waves of Grain

This past week I spent in Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, and only packed red, white and blue clothing for easy outfitting and Americana spirit. I have a few rules on summer vacations- pack light, bring a good book, and never blow dry your hair. That way I can spend more time eating, drinking, and enjoying the beautiful surroundings. I hope you have plans for a great summer vacation!

Maxi dress: American Apparel ($44). Shirt: Gap Japan. Espadrilles: Mia (from Marshall’s, other colors here). Necklace: Stefanie Marie Designs. Jewelry: C.Wonder, Forever21, souvenirs from India. Bag: J.Crew. Sunnies: Forever21

Mother’s Day: My Mom’s Style Part II

Last year one of my most popular posts was this one, which featured my mother’s style in the 1950′s and 60′s. This year for mother’s day, my tribute to my mother’s style will continue into the fun and funky 1970′s. Turtlenecks and wide legs, jumpsuits and jeans; the 70′s were definitely the era of free-spirits and casual cool.

Be sure to check out last year‘s outfits as well!

{Tonal mustard colors and a knit beanie visiting the Lenin statue in Moscow. And it may be hard to see, but check out those platform boots she has!}

{Sporting her tennis whites working as a hostess for the tennis tournament the Davis Cup. If you ask me this was the heyday of women’s athletic clothing- look how chic and cute she looks- so what if there’s no sweat wicking properties in the fabric!}

{Hiking the Milford Track in New Zealand in 1974. Clearly wide leg jeans were all the rage- even for hiking! I particularly like how my mom paired her jeans with a matching denim head kerchief.}

{And BY FAR my favorite- this chic little 2 piece suit that mimics the look of a jumpsuit for her 1974 Pan Am Flight Attendant uniform. Everything about this look is amazeballs- that neck scarf, the hidden belt slits, the asymmetrical hat. If you checked out last year‘s post, you can see how the objectification of working women had evolved over the years. Instead of being displayed in a tiny dress, here she looks comfortable but still put together!}

ONE MORE THING. My mother isn’t the only mother in my immediate family now. My brother and sister-in-law just had their first baby, so I want to wish my sister-in-law a special FIRST Mother’s Day as well.

{Welcome baby Hudson!}

Happy Mother’s Day to my mom and all the mom’s out there showing us what great style and class should be- Have a great weekend!

Cinco de Mayo Fiesta

As I’m sure you are all well-aware, this past Saturday was both Cinco de Mayo and the Kentucky Derby. While I think most of the east-coasters I live around now are more used to celebrating the Derby, I decided to bring a little of our west coast love of Mexican Independence Day to our little casa. Our get-together was very small and fairly last minute, but with a few simple decorative touches and a pot-luck Mexican dip-off, the guests were kept very entertained!

{Make your own Margarita Bar}

{mini cocktail shakers}

{Lime juice in a Corona Light bottle}

{Some of the fabulous dips, quesadillas, and mexican wedding cookies}

{DE-LIC-LIOUS salad, which was also a great topping for the tacos that I don’t have a picture of}

What do you think? How did you celebrate Cinco de Mayo/Kentucky Derby?

Also- I did a little “Runway to Room” Guest Post for Lindsey over at Pinklet and C – check it out here!

The Easter/Passover Conundrum

Both Easter and Passover are coming up this weekend, but this will be the first year in a while I will yearn to celebrate both. I grew up celebrating Easter, with my mother hiding eggs around the house for my brothers and I to find (the one with the $20 bill in it was gold!), but since graduating college, I have also been celebrating Passover with my boyfriend and friends. Passover has grown to be my third favorite holiday of the year now (after Halloween and Christmas of course!) and it is just as big of a deal to me to do it right as other holidays are.

This year I will be celebrating Passover at my boyfriend’s parent’s house, and will have an Easter brunch that following Sunday, so while I will be trying to remain kosher for the whole week, there might be a few Easter treats that throw me off course. Below are some of my favorite Passover and Easter treats and decorations (kosher or not!) that I hope to enjoy this year.

{the dream table for Passover}

{with this modern Jonathan Adler Seder plate}

{complete with some DIY’d gilded stemware. I mean, you do have to drink 4 glasses, right?}

{First course, Matzoh ball soup with potato noodles}

{you can’t have Passover without brisket and root veggies}

{but maybe we mash the root veggies this time? Delish}

{try rocky road matzoh for dessert}

{and enjoy chocolate caramel matzoh all week long}

{since Easter is more about brunch, how about these scalloped sweet potato cakes to serve with your ham?}

{followed by a necessity; some pastel dyed  deviled eggs}

{Or better yet, this adorable chick version}

{with endless trays of tea sandwiches}

{with mini key lime tarts for dessert}

{followed by tiny macaroon nests! bonus: the coconut in these makes them work for Passover too!}

I hope you all enjoy and happy, family and loved one filled weekend for either Passover or Easter. And please tell me, what are your favorite Passover or Easter foods and traditions?
