Thurs-DIY: Favorite DIY Blogs

Hello Style Safari-ers (seriously, I need a better name for you readers!), I am in San Francisco this week at my parents house and do not have my trusty DIY supplies, so unfortunately that means we are going sans craft today. However, Thurs-DIY must carry on! I have put together a list of my favorite DIY blogs in the hopes that they will be able to inspire you to make something new this weekend- I know they always amaze and inspire me!

Centsational Girl

I absolutely LOVE everything about Kate’s blog and aesthetic. Her projects are easy but on-point, and are of course photographed so beautifully that you cannot resist making them. My two personal favorites are her Sisal Rope Bowl (of which I have replicated on a vase of mine) and the lacquered box look-a-likes, that have even more character than the inspiration!

Kate’s Creative Space

Kate’s Creative Space is relatively new to me, but I love how well-rounded she is; by following her blog you can get a delicious dessert recipe, a bridal shower gift idea, or decorating ideas for your child’s room. I don’t have a need for that last one yet, but you never know when inspiration will hit! Next on my list is to make these adorable chalkboard mugs.

Sarah M Dorsey Designs

Holy flippin’ MOLY is this woman talented. I could peruse her blog all day drooling over her chic DIY’s and home renovations. However, not everyone has a husband/boyfriend/garage like her to help out with the heavy duty machinery. But for the rest of us, it makes for fantastic inspiration! Check out the picture below, where she DIY’d the pillows, lamp shade, side table AND headboard.

A Beautiful Mess

Elsie has an amazing way of taking the simplest little things in life and making them beautiful in their own little way. Her style is crafty/rustic/cute and all her DIYs add a bit of homemade flair to what otherwise would be a boring piece. I particularly love these adorable DIYs: a woodgrain rug and gingham tool set

P.S.-I made this…

She is the messiah of DIY, the person who turned DIY into not only a form of art but also of funding, no one other than Erica of PS-I made this… While I love everything she does, I am particularly drawn to her innovative uses of objects. One of my recent faves is her digital floral bangle, and my all time favorite is her faux porcelain pottery that I recreated  years ago and use all the time!

A Pair and A Spare

This australian bombshell literally teaches you how to make REAL. PIECES. OF. CLOTHING. I’m not talking about cutoff shorts or studded collars (although she does that too!) but she teaches invaluable sewing tricks and stitch techniques, and has killer taste to boot. On my list to DIY from her blog are the Peplum Skirt and the Cap Toe Heel.

Glitter ‘N Glue

Kristen is the lovable blogger behind Glitter ‘N Glue, and I love how she interprets current season fashion trends into simple, whimsical DIYs. Why spend tons of money on a trendy transparent purse when you can make hers from a make-up bag? And if you’re dying to add to your arm party, try out her DIY neon rope cuff-both tutorials are so easy and right on trend for summer!

What are your favorite DIY blogs? I would love to hear your suggestions for more daily reads!

Thurs-DIY: 31 Hour Bag Inspired Ipad Bag

Today’s DIY is my own version of my current dream bag. The Philip Lim 31 Hour Bag is so streamlined and downtown chic, and I particularly am drawn to the reversible black/white version. So I figured, why don’t I try my own spin on it for an ipad case? I added longer straps so I could throw it over my shoulder, and I love how there is still room for my keys, wallet and notebook/misc purse items. See below for how I did it!

Supplies:

1. Newspaper (to protect your workspace!)

2. 17″ Neoprene Laptop Sleeve (I got mine here)

3. White fabric paint (mine is from here)

4. 1 to 1.5 yd Faux leather straps (can get from any local craft/fabric store) in black and white

5. Sponge brush

6. Scissors

7. Masking Tape (optional)

{This step is optional- if you have a steady hand, you can free-paint!}

{the neoprene will absorb some of the paint, so you may have to do several coats}

{the finished product!}

What do you think? I can’t wait to wear it around/bring it to my local coffee shop to work!

Thurs-DIY: Feather Trim Jacket or Vest

Today’s DIY is inspired by the fabulous Elizabeth and James feathered blazer worn above by Krystal, Chiara, and Anh. While I love myself a white blazer anytime of the year, I feel that you can add some fun, frothy feathers to any structured piece to add movement, so I decided to update my black vest. I definitely suggest picking a piece that hits at least at your hip- anything shorter will add too much volume to your waist. So instead of paying $665 for the E&J version, we get a simple look alike for around $10!

Supplies:

1. Jacket or vest in any color

2. Scissors

3. Fabric Glue or E6000 Glue and optional nozzle

4. Pins

5. 2-3 yds of feather trim. I chose faux feathers for $5/yd from Mood, but you can get all types of real feathers for $20-$30 a yard if you so desire. They come in tons of colors and shapes, including the light wispy ones on the E&J blazer.

{I chose to alternate the direction of the feathers}

{Make sure you add the trim below any pockets!}

Thurs-DIY: Earring Studs

I’ve been wanting to do/share this DIY idea for a while. A lot of times DIY projects are complicated and not worth the money and time they take to complete. Today’s little project – ok, it’s more of a tip – is so easy, you will find yourself adding bling to literally everything from shirts to bags to your boyfriend’s ties. Ok, maybe not the latter yet – but honestly how great would that be?

Enjoy!

What you need:

1. Lots of cheap earrings- I got a pack of 9 pairs from H&M for $5.95

2. Wire cutters or strong scissors

2. Some clothes to stud

See? I told you it was easy!

Thurs-DIY: Tropical Floral Tee

Aloha! This week our DIY is something I’m completely coconuts about- a tropical floral tee! We all know florals have been a big trend for spring, but for summer they are taking a brighter, more festive turn, inspired by Stella McCartney’s luau prints. You can get the looks above for $80 to several hundred… but I decided to replicate it with some bright fabric and a neon shirt for $15! Read on for the how-to’s!

What you need:

1. Any old tee. I prefer brights and neons for this project. Old Navy has some great ones here.

2. 1/2 yd of any floral fabric. Mine is from Mood in NYC but here, here and here are some other options that are cheap cheap cheap!

3. Scissors

4. Fabric Glue

5. Studs and studding supplies. If you do decide to include studs (because I stud EV-ER-Y-THING) then I suggest following my studding tutorial here!

Then wear anywhere you want to bring the Tropics to your life! I personally LOVE the way this came out, and it was so easy. Let me know if you try it!

ThursDIY: Gucci-Inspired Deco Jacket

What’s not to love about Gucci’s spring/summer ’12 RTW collection? The striking colors, bold patterns and sophisticated silhouettes are completely alluring, and any girl would die to own a piece of this art deco collection. I’ve had a white jacket from Old Navy (previously seen here) that I’ve been wanting to “Deco-rate” for a while now, so this Gucci collection was the perfect inspiration to finally do it!

What you need:

1. Something to ‘deco-rate’; a solid tee, dress or jacket will do

2. Two-sided decorative ribbon. I chose simple black gros-grain because I wanted it to go with everything, but feel free to jazz it up with some metallics!

3. Load of pins

4. Fabri-Tac all purpose glue

5. Scissors (not pictured)

{When pinning out your design, feel free to fold over the ribbon to create corners; that’s why it’s double sided!}

I’m pretty happy with the way mine came out because I love the pattern and the way it sort of looks like a harness! It will definitely be a great statement addition to a black mini dress or black pants. Just the perfect amount of bold pattern to wake up an otherwise boring outfit!
