DIY: Neon Wrap Watch

I’m so excited for today’s DIY! Although I was never a watch wearer before, after making this neon wrap watch I feel like I can wear my jewelry and still be on time. Imagine that? I fell in love with these La Mer neon leather wrap watches the moment I saw them- they are the perfect blend of form and function- and knew that it would only be a matter of time before I DIY-ed them myself. Although the real watches will run you a cool $100, you can DIY this watch for $30 or less.

What you will need:

1. A simple, functioning old watch with leather band. The cheaper the better! Mine was from KMart for $18

2. 1 yard of neon ribbon- or get creative and choose some stripes!

3. 4 1/4″ studs of your choice

4. Tacky Glue

5. Scissors

6. Fastener from your local craft or jewelry store

Step 1: Cut your watch FREE from the leather! Or pleather in this case…

Step 2: Cut your yard of ribbon in half. Fold one end through the watch band loop and fold over the end of the ribbon. Secure with glue.

Step 3: Press prongs of studs into folded over area of ribbon to secure. Press the prongs in tight so they hold the layers together. Repeat on other side.

Step 4: Wrap bracelet around your wrist to see how long you want the ribbons to go. Cut even sides off of each side.

Step 5: Repeat steps 2 and 3 to attach ribbon to buckle clasp

Step 6: Voila! Wear as your friends admire your watch and are neon green with envy!

DIY- Floral Print Heels

Today’s DIY is inspired by a trend seen everywhere from the runways at Celine to the shelves at Forever21-bright and funky modern florals. These aren’t your grandma’s napkins- these prints are infused with intricate details and neon colors and are seen from anything from pants to shoes and everything in between. Here, I’m going to show you how to add a punch of festive florals to your wardrobe without breaking the bank.

What you need:

1. Shoes in need of some revamping, with a wooden or plastic heel

2. 2 sheets of bright floral fine paper! (You need something flexible, wrapping paper will not do). This one is from Paper-Source

3. Regular paper or newsprint

4. Scissors

5. Foam Brush

6. Glue- anything like Fabric-Tac or Elmer’s will work

7. MATTE Mod Podge or any other matte varnish. I bought this Polymer Varnish because my local craft store was out of Mod Podge- and it worked just fine!

Step 1: Cut a small piece of newsprint and mold it to fit the shape of your shoe. This is very important to create the template so we don’t bend or rip the floral paper.

Step 2: Lay out the newsprint shape on the floral paper and cut 2 identical copies.

Step 3: Use your glue and sponge brush to brush a thin layer of glue on the wood heel.

Step 4: Quickly before the glue dries, mold the paper to the shape of the heel. Once the paper is moistened (sorry- I hate that word too) by the glue- it will be more malleable and shape to curved heels, but it won’t stretch that much!

Step 5: After the paper dries on the glue, follow the instructions on your varnish or Mod Podge to apply 2-3 coats. Let each coat dry before applying the next coat- to ensure that the paper and glue can withhold walking up and down those busy streets!

Unzipped

I might be a little late on the zip-pouch-as-clutch trend, but as my friends and family know, when I’m rarely late to a party, it’s always because I made the outfit myself (and something broke… or needed to be hemmed… or glued…)

Anyway, I was truly inspired by this leather and printed silk and thought I would try my hand at bag-making. Obviously I added studs, because well… what thing in your life shouldn’t have studs? I love the overall look and can’t wait to take it out on the town!
