DIY Handpainted Mugs

Lately I’ve been completely inspired by all the fun coffee mugs and tea cups out there. I know that sounds ridiculous, but sometimes an extra special mug can make that morning cup of coffee so much better. This DIY will take your morning latte, afternoon chai or nightly herbal tea to a whole new level, and it also makes a great gift idea!

What you need:

1. Blank white mugs (mine are from Sur la Table)

2. Pebeo porcelaine Paints

3. Various Paintbrushes

4. An oven

Step 1: Clean the mugs thoroughly to make sure they are squeaky clean

Step 2: Decide your design ahead of time. Since this mug is already glossy, using a pencil will not work to draw your pattern out ahead of time. Or like, me, just paint as you go and see where it takes you!

Step 3: Paint in small, quick strokes. You will have to build up layers of color since the paint is slightly translucent, so don’t pick a design that has to be perfect!

Step 4: Let dry for 24 hours, then get ready to fire! What, you don’t have a kiln in your closet? No problem, these paints set in 30 minutes at 300 degrees. Just make sure you pick an oven safe mug and that you put the mug in AS the over starts to heat up, not after. The sudden change of temperature can cause it to crack. Please note that these paints are not food-safe. So while painting a cookie jar all over may be a great idea, for a coffee cup you will want to avoid painting the inside, the rim and anywhere you think someone’s mouth might go (I messed that up on one of the designs below)

Have fun and experiment with different designs and monograms!
